Hi, I can’t tell if this noise is coming from my car’s water pump, I went with my friend to this mechanic he knows and all he did was looked down the water pump and said it was the water pump making noise. He said he could make sure if it is the water pump if I bring it in later.

Can he find out for sure if the noise is from the water pump? I’m just worried it might be from the engine, if so then I might as well sell the car and not spend anymore money on it changing the water pump. Thanks.

If you don’t have an automotive style stethoscope (like doctors use) then place the tip of a long screwdriver on the water pump while listening on the handle end when the car is running. You should be able to hear any odd noises. It is hard to tell because of the rumbling background but you can place it on a good device such as an alternator to tell the difference.

Hydrogen cars are complex and not easy to build without specific technical knowledge.

You will need a source of hydrogen gas, you will need a way to transfer that gas into useful energy.. e.g., momentum to wheels, (I say it this way because it may not be just an engine) and then wheels, etc.

There are two typical designs for hydrogen cars — one with an internal combustion engine that runs on hydrogen (think a typical automobile that runs on hydrogen instead of gasoline) and a fuel cell.

The fuel cell produces electricity directly from turning hydrogen and oxygen into water. The electricity is used to power an electric motor that powers the car.

Both are very complex systems..

Now, the easiest and maybe even cheapest way would be a fuel cell kit. I hate to advocate any commercial source but I have put a link below that is for a fuel cell car kit that is solar powered. The kit costs 0 so it is not cheap. Btw another product in the same online store is just the fuel cell for -80. (I only know about the kits because I ran across these several months ago when I was looking for a birthday present for a 13 yr old friend. )

I say no! Why? Because the problem is fossil fuel dependency in itself. The HHO myth(yes, it is a myth) is that you make the gas from water that fuels your vehicle like a gas, electric hybrid. The myth part? Where did the electricity come from to break the water down into HHO? The fossil fuel!
The simple breakdown of the problem is that you still need electricity to break down water into HHO. The physics of electrolysis dictate that it still takes 6 parts of energy to get 1 part of energy from the process of burning hydrogen or using it in a fuel cell to recoup your energy expenditure. It may be a slightly better ratio if you burn the hydrogen and the oxygen together. How is the use of simple electrolysis a solution? It’s not. For those that are interested in changing the world. Please stay tuned. For those who have a different opinion, please(and I do mean please) leave an answer to why you think I am in the wrong.

Chosen Answer:

No it is not the solution, but it does help ease the pain.
The problem is the mass engineering that relies on fossile fuels instead of other available resources.

Any are you really asking a question to get answers? Your post belongs in a forum somewhere. This is yahoo answers, not a forum debate.

I am one of thousands of people already using HHO in union with Gasoline to improve gas mileage. I’ve tripled mine, and countless others have already past doubled theirs.
The electricity comes from your alternator (powered by gasoline combustion) and is stored in the battery. HHO will not run a vehicle alone without eventually needing to recharge the battery. However, vehicles can run off Hydrogen and Oxygen – just not indefinietly.
Don’t go screaming “Myth”, try it out for yourself – then judge. Otherwise you just make an Ar$e out of yourself.

Iam going to build a hydrogen generator as a new project, links plans, or any advice would be much appreciated

Chosen Answer:

A genny is little more than an alternator driven by an engine, that is setsto maintain a steady speed.

Design/Functioning of engine…
If you’re intending to burn it in an reciprocating engine, it’s worthwhile remembering that Hydrogen burns VERY fast after ignition. This means the pressure rise after ignition will be a lot sharper than that of an engine fuelled on petrol. With the same calorific value of fuel, the peak pressure is likely to be higher too. There’s likely to be differences in curve of the expansion, and exhaust stroke, due to difference in the make up of the gases. But overall expect the engine’s p-V diagram is likely to be closer to idealised cycle than the of a real engine fuelled by petrol

http://webphysics.davidson.edu/physlet_resources/thermal/engine.html

Stronger components are gonna be needed to deal with the higher peak pressure, ignition timing will also need retarded! Combustion is gonna be a lot hotter too, so cooling is gonna need improved. Additionally remember hotter combustion means more oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust gases. hydrogen will burn over a much greater range of concentrations than petrol so it should be possible to run the engine leaner/richer than petrol.

You’re gonna need quite of lot of hydrogen. Each rev of an otto cycle engine takes in a volume of gas equal to 1/2 the engines displacement. Ideally 2/3 of that should be hydrogen (at atmospheric pressure). So 1/3 of the engines displacement in hydrogen per rev. Think alternators like to be turned at about 2000RPM so looking at a hydrogen consumption PER SECOND that 11 times the engine’s displacement

—
Generating the hydrogen…
There’s lots of designs out there (eg on You-Tube) for generating Browns gas (a mixture of 1 part Oxygen to 2part Hydrogen) via electrolysis of water but I think you’d be wanting the gas streams to be kept seperate, at least in storage. (Much safer. 100% hydrogen on it’s own CAN’T explode, unless it gets into contact with Oxygen)

I’m working on design produce seperate O2 and H2 streams myself(not for an engine per-se though, and at much lower volumes) and due to the difficulties of obtaining exotic materials such as Nafion, I think the Hofman Voltameter offers an fairly good starting point…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofmann_Voltameter

—
Remember that it costs more energy to produce the hydrogen than you can ever get back from burning it ON IT’S OWN. However when combined with other fuels, the mixture is gonna behave differently, and I’ve a hunch (UNTESTED!) that as hydrogen burns a lot faster than other fuels , the addition of a small amount of hydrogen to a normal petrol fueled otto engine MIGHT mean faster combustion and move it closer to the ideal otto-cycle . If this is the case there would be an optimum amount, and adding more would drop efficency (due to the energy needed to make the hydrogen, exceeding any increase in output). Again there’s likely to be problems due to high peak cylinder pressures/temperatures, which could damage the engine.
It’s just the same when ether/”starting gas” is used. That tends to blow piston rings destroying the compression.

Keep adding plates and removing the oxidized plates. The hydrogen produced from these scams are not entirely from electrolysis as that would never produce enough hydrogen to even replace the energy used in electrolysis but also from the oxidation of metals, in effect using metal as a fuel, this metal may not even be directly in the cell but oxidized externally with the electron flow throughout the car.

Basically, for onboard hydrogen generation to work, you need another source of fuel although that source may not be immediately evident to the laymen hence many people are easily lead to believe that the concept worked when in fact there are other reactions occurring. This makes the concept perfect for swindling money from people especially since most people know about electrolysis of water to make hydrogen and oxygen as it’s a common physics demonstration in grade school but few people are aware of the actual amount of energy involved in electrolysis versus how much can be recovered by using hydrogen as a fuel. Add to this that auto manufacturers have occasionally toyed with the idea of a hydrogen car as another designed obsolescence marketing vector and the concept receives an aura of possibility in the minds of the uninformed.

So when you refill your “water” car, replace all the oxidized metal while you’re at it and add some gasoline then pat your back for being so easily fooled.

I plan on taking out all the acid from a car battery then fill it with distilled water + EDTA, rinse, then restore the acid and maybe top it off with some distilled water. The problem is that its pretty hard to make a fairly large quantity of distilled water at home. Can I just use the water that comes out of my fridge? My refridgerator has a build in water filter.

Buy distilled water from a grocery store. If you are worried that it may have some contaminates precipitated from the air, don’t. The same or worse will get into it after it is put in the battery. I have to say though, you are a battery god if you are willing to go through all that trouble for a fifty dollar battery

Chemical or electrical?
Acid + metal will give you hydrogen chemically.
Electrolysis of water, (Wiki it), will do it with low voltage D.C.
****Careful. *****
Any significant amount of loose hydrogen can constitute
a serious explosive hazard.
It ignites very readily, and forms explosive mixtures
with air at a wide range of concentrations.
